§ 14-130. Fire inspectors.

  • (a)

    Qualifications. Candidates shall be active firefighters of the town fire and emergency medical services department and shall have successfully completed the basic fire inspection course of a VTAE, as well as meet any other criteria set forth by state law.

    (b)

    Inspections. Fire inspectors shall inspect all buildings, premises and thoroughfares within the fire department and emergency medical services area for the purpose of noting and causing the correction of any Code violations or hazardous conditions liable to cause injury or loss of property, as well as identify conditions that will potentially obstruct the fire and emergency medical services department in the performance of its duties.

    (c)

    Identified hazards. Whenever and wherever a fire inspection reveals a fire hazard, the fire inspector shall serve a notice in writing upon the owner of the property, giving such owner a reasonable time in which to remove or correct the hazard. If the fire hazard is not removed or corrected within the allotted time, it shall be deemed a nuisance. The fire chief is then authorized to start procedures with the town legal counsel to have the violations corrected by the appropriate authorities and the cost of such removal or correction shall be recoverable from the owner of the property through whatever means the town board has available to it.

    (d)

    Inspection records. Fire inspectors shall create a written record of each property inspected which shall conform to the requirements of the state department of safety and professional services and shall make the number of reports of inspections required by such board.

    (e)

    Access to inspection. No person shall deny a fire inspector free access to any public property within the town fire department and emergency medical services area at any reasonable time for the purpose of making fire inspections. No person shall hinder or obstruct a fire inspector in the performance of his duty or refuse to correct any unlawful hazard indicated to him.

    (f)

    Fire inspection compliance. Fire inspections shall comply with the state department of safety and professional services as is necessary to receive the two percent insurance refund.
